If you’ve ever watched “The Fixers”, they’re a group that helps create/complete structures in 3rd world countries and for non profit organizations that will benefit entire communities. They had teamed up with a ministry called Orchard: Africa and spent a week in Khayelitsha South Africa to create a learning center for this extremely impoverished, densely populated area.
What they created stems from: WHAT PART OF CANT, CANT CANT DO?
This entire area has NO money, NO land, NO water
They’ve been allotted one gallon a day of water per capita. Low and Behold, a vertical garden is able to survive and thrive within what they’re allotted. Moisture doesn’t extend beyond the limited soil in the given container as it would in the ground. What was the center’s purpose? To educate HOW to grow life sustaining food in containers that are otherwise trash.
Free for the using was 2 liter pop bottles, cinder blocks, old tires, wood pallets, porous cloth etc… The point is, push come to shove and nobody has access to anything currently on store shelves, they survive, we die.
Practically free however is the ability to take on the hobby as a family and learn thru trial and error. Vertical Gardening aka “Living Walls” are so much easier to maintain (and get the kiddo’s to help with). What a smart family venture!
